Maurice BrownDirector - External Affairs

Hi. I'm Maurice Brown, Director - External Affairs. My responsibilities include community relations, local government affairs, economic, consumer and education relations and local media relations for Essex County. I also am responsible for African-American and urban initiatives in New Jersey and local corporate philanthropy and employee volunteerism.

I began my career at New Jersey Bell in 1971 as a frame attendant. Previous job responsibilities include training as an employment interviewer and recruiter, an EEO investigator, an assistant manager in Network Operations and an engineer.

I am a former President of the Consortium of Information and Telecommunication Executives, Inc. (CITE) of Verizon and former President of the Council of Action for Minority Professionals of Verizon-New Jersey. As an executive member of the New Brunswick Branch of the NAACP, I served as Second Vice President of the NJ  NAACP State Conference of Branches during 1998 through 1999. I am a Commissioner for the Montclair Civil Rights Commission and serve on both the Essex County Workforce Investment Board and the Newark Workforce Investment Board.

I hold the distinguished honor of recently being appointed to the Office of Attorney Ethics in Essex County, for the Supreme Court of New Jersey.  I serve on the Boards for the 200 Club of Essex County, the Urban League of Essex County and as Secretary for the Essex County College Community Advisory Board.  I am on the board for the Essex County Chamber of Commerce and was a founding member of the NJ Black Chamber of Commerce.

I have been named as one of New Jersey's "100 Most Influential" in the urban community and have been honored for my work in the community by many organizations, including the Black Minister's Council, the NAACP and Project Re-Direct.

As a graduate of Newark College of Engineering, now known as New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), I majored in Electrical Engineering. In 1970, I founded the Black Association of Student Engineers located at NJIT.  I am a 2001 graduate of Leadership NJ.  In addition, I have completed advance management programs at the Wharton School of Business and Boston College.

As a Director-External Affairs, I would be more than happy to talk with you about the kinds of services Verizon offers.  I can tell you more about how Verizon is transforming itself into a next generation broadband company with our fiber network and our new FiOS services, which provide clearer voice, faster Internet and soon choice in the cable TV market with our FiOS TV service.

I also can share with you information about Verizon's many educational and economic development initiatives in the state.

Feel free to call me at 973 416-1464 or reach me via e-mail at maurice.j.brown@verizon.com.
